In 2022, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the Indonesian children's literacy index. The index is the result of a test on 15-year-old students through The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which shows that students in Indonesia scored much lower than the average of other countries measured. Compared to 2018, the average results that year decreased in the fields of mathematics, reading, and science literacy. In fact, the literacy index for Indonesia is the lowest ever measured.

Previously, in 2019, the Ministry of Education and Culture released a report on the Reading Literacy Activity Index of 34 Provinces, which concluded that the reading activity index in Indonesia was classified as low literacy activity. In addition, two years earlier, in 2017, the Ministry of Education and Culture had reported through the National Literacy Movement Guidelines that the majority of students' abilities in mathematics were very low at 77.13%, lacking in reading at 46.83%, and lacking in science at 73.61%.

Is that enough? Of course there are still survey reports such as those conducted by Central Connecticut State University. The results were the same, Indonesia's literacy ranked 60th out of 61 countries measured.
